Standing alongside Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper spent two days in India this week reviewing the long-term India-UK Vision 2035. The visit signals a renewed push to accelerate trade negotiations and deepen cooperation on global security and critical mineral stability.
The discussions focused on auditing progress across five core pillars: economic growth, technological advancement, defense, climate action, and education. Cooper and her counterparts prioritized the ongoing Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, aiming to resolve bottlenecks that have hindered a final deal. Under the Technology Security Initiative, both nations identified significant gains in critical minerals and emerging tech sectors, areas now viewed as essential to national security.A tangible result of the trip was the launch of the Critical Minerals Supply Chain Observatory, a new initiative designed to secure material flows between the two nations. Beyond industrial policy, the UK and India finalized a series of maritime and academic pacts intended to solidify research collaboration and naval cooperation. Cooper’s visit underscores a strategic pivot toward leveraging historical ties to address modern geopolitical challenges, ensuring that the bilateral framework remains resilient against shifting global economic conditions.
