Internal Rebellion Fractures West Bengal’s Trinamool Congress

Fifty-eight legislators have broken ranks within the Trinamool Congress, throwing the party into a deepening crisis that threatens to split its legislative block. The rebels, including expelled figures Ritabrata Banerjee and Sandipan Saha, now claim the mantle of the official opposition, challenging the party’s internal hierarchy and leadership appointments.

State Minister Dilip Ghosh described the current turmoil as an inevitable collapse, suggesting that a definitive split might be the most practical outcome for the party. The insurgency centers on the rejection of Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay as Leader of the Opposition, a move the dissident faction refuses to recognize. While the party leadership dismisses these claims, branding the rebellion as illegitimate and riddled with procedural irregularities, the internal pressure continues to mount.

Simultaneously, the arrest of Swarup Biswas on extortion charges has emboldened critics. Ghosh anticipates a wave of new allegations against party figures, suggesting that as public fear recedes, more individuals are coming forward to challenge established power structures. The legislative assembly remains deadlocked as both sides fight for control over the party's official status.
