Negotiations for a sweeping free trade agreement between Britain and India are moving at an unprecedented pace, according to UK Trade Minister Peter Kyle. Despite lingering disputes over steel tariffs, the two nations appear committed to finalizing terms without reopening the core architecture of the deal for further debate.
Following high-level meetings in Delhi, Kyle confirmed that his counterpart, Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, remains aligned on the project’s trajectory. The UK government maintains that the current friction regarding steel trade measures operates on a separate track from the broader economic pact. While the implementation phase may face a slight postponement, the fundamental framework of the agreement is effectively locked, signaling a departure from the usual slow-motion nature of international trade diplomacy.Beyond the Indian negotiations, Kyle addressed broader trade security, specifically regarding the UK’s relationship with the United States. He dismissed concerns that recent British policies targeting forced labor would trigger retaliatory US tariffs. By affirming the stability of existing agreements with Washington, the government aims to project confidence in its post-Brexit independent trade strategy.
