US Envoy Signals Final Stretch for India-US Trade Agreement

With 99 percent of a sweeping bilateral trade deal finalized, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor is pushing to cement the partnership as the defining relationship of the generation. Speaking at the CITI India 2026 Conference, Gor confirmed that Washington and New Delhi are navigating the final technical hurdles.

The trade relationship between the two nations has surged from $20 billion to $220 billion over the past two decades. Gor emphasized that the Trump administration views the current negotiations as a priority, aimed at unlocking new opportunities for American firms. While technical details remain, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal recently characterized the remaining points of contention as mere administrative finishing touches.

Beyond immediate trade figures, the ambassador pointed toward broader strategic alignment, specifically in energy security and the diversification of global supply chains. He warned against the dangers of over-reliance on single-segment logistics, advocating for more resilient, integrated networks. Addressing persistent investor anxieties regarding intellectual property, Gor maintained that India remains a secure destination for capital, noting that the government shows clear commitment to protecting proprietary assets. The envoy called for continued, candid dialogue on sensitive policy areas, including technology transfers and export controls, as both countries prepare to move into a new phase of economic integration.
