Federal authorities claim the couple utilized fraudulent maritime certifications and false flags to disguise vessels transporting Iranian petroleum. By masquerading as official registries for countries including Guyana, Eswatini, and Laos, the network allowed ships linked to the Iranian military and its proxies to operate without proper insurance or regulatory oversight. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent stated that the administration remains committed to penalizing entities supporting the Iranian regime, regardless of their location or mode of transport.
The sanctions extend to nine entities connected to the couple and Turkey-based Fugo Ground Services Inc, which provided ground handling for sanctioned airlines such as Iran Air Tour and Saha Airlines. These actions follow the collapse of diplomatic efforts to end the Iran war, a conflict that has significantly impacted US domestic gasoline prices and influenced recent midterm election results. While the administration asserts these measures are effectively crippling the Iranian economy, experts suggest the decision signals a continued escalation of economic warfare rather than a move toward de-escalation.
