Democrats Flip Long-Held South Carolina Senate Seat in Major Upset

A 28-year Republican stronghold in South Carolina crumbled Tuesday as paediatrician Annie Andrews defeated Darline Graham. The victory provides a critical boost for Democrats, who are fighting to dismantle the GOP's 53-47 Senate majority in an election cycle defined by high-stakes battles for control of the upper chamber.

The vacancy emerged in July following the death of Senator Lindsey Graham, a staunch ally of the former president. Seeking to preserve his influence, Donald Trump handpicked Darline Graham to complete the term and encouraged her candidacy for a full six-year cycle. Despite the heavy backing from the former president, the political newcomer struggled to gain traction with voters.

During the primary phase, Darline Graham faced scrutiny over her lack of legislative background, even admitting publicly that she remained uninformed on core national security issues. Her political inexperience ultimately proved to be a vulnerability that Andrews exploited to secure the seat. This loss marks a significant reversal for the Republican Party, which had maintained an unbroken grip on the position for nearly three decades.
