The 19-year-old Matsuda and 20-year-old Donlon departed from the Leadville campus last Friday, intending to summit the 13,958-foot Ice Mountain. While they set out under rainy skies, conditions deteriorated rapidly that afternoon, dumping two feet of snow across the range. When the pair failed to return by Sunday, college staff raised the alarm. A massive search operation involving 60 volunteers, drones, and canine units eventually located their tent collapsed under snow near a lake northwest of their intended peak. Investigators believe the students diverted their route toward the 13,597-foot West Apostle Mountain, where they were ultimately found.
Local authorities praised the young men for their diligence, noting that the duo carried the proper safety gear and followed established backcountry protocols. Sheriff Andy Rohrich emphasized that even experienced climbers can be overwhelmed by the volatility of high-altitude weather. Forensic experts are scheduled to conduct autopsies this coming Monday to confirm the circumstances of their deaths. Campus dean Ben Cairns remembered the pair as students of immense promise, noting that their loss has devastated the close-knit community of Leadville, where both had moved to pursue their shared passion for outdoor leadership and mountain sports.
