Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev recently confirmed that Russia has deployed over 30 satellites, a fledgling effort compared to the nearly 10,000 low-orbit units currently operated by SpaceX. Putin stressed that while Moscow must transition from experimental quality to mass quantity, the current gap remains stark. The Russian president noted that formal communication channels with American partners, including Musk, persist to maintain orbital order.
This acknowledgment carries significant weight given the role of Starlink and its military derivative, Starshield, in the ongoing conflict. Ukraine’s reliance on these systems has been absolute, though the relationship has occasionally fractured over speed restrictions and usage policies. While recent connectivity issues have been resolved, the friction underscores the influence wielded by Musk, whose private infrastructure now dictates the pace of military operations on the ground.
