Cantonal Banks Surge as Swiss Banking Landscape Shifts

A new Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts study reveals that cantonal banks have displaced Raiffeisen as Switzerland's primary banking choice. With 28 percent of the market, these institutions now lead the sector, while the combined market presence of UBS and Credit Suisse has contracted significantly following their recent merger.

Cantonal Banks Surge as Swiss Banking Landscape Shifts

The latest data shows a clear hierarchy in Swiss retail banking, where four major providers command 89 percent of all primary banking relationships. While cantonal banks hold the top spot at 28 percent, Raiffeisen follows closely with 25 percent, ahead of Postfinance at 19 percent and UBS at 17 percent. The shift is most notable for UBS; the integration of Credit Suisse resulted in a three-percentage-point decline from the 20 percent share the two entities held separately two years ago.

Demographic and geographic factors drive these trends. UBS maintains a firm grip on the wealthy, serving one-third of clients with assets exceeding 500,000 Swiss francs. Conversely, Raiffeisen dominates the younger demographic, capturing 27 to 28 percent of customers under 45. While digital challengers like Revolut, Yuh, and Neon are growing, they remain a secondary choice for most, currently holding only 2.4 percent of the primary banking market. Regional disparities persist as well, with cantonal banks exerting strong influence in western Switzerland while Raiffeisen remains the preferred provider in Ticino.
