Trump Recalls Sundar Pichai’s Rejection of Atlantic Ocean Renaming

Donald Trump recently disclosed that Google CEO Sundar Pichai personally blocked his proposal to rename the Atlantic Ocean to the “Trump Ocean.” During a South Carolina rally, the President recounted his conversation with the Google executive, who argued that international oceans are distinct from domestic landmarks due to their global geographic scope.

Trump described the exchange as a direct appeal for Google Maps to update the ocean’s designation, following his previous success in renaming the Gulf of Mexico and a domestic lake. While Google complied with the Gulf of Mexico change for US users, Pichai reportedly held firm on the Atlantic, noting that major oceans span too many countries to be subject to a unilateral rebrand. Despite this setback, Trump remains focused on his cartographic ambitions, suggesting that he might consider renaming the Pacific Ocean the “American Ocean” instead.

Beyond the Atlantic, the President addressed ongoing geopolitical tensions, specifically regarding the Strait of Hormuz. He claimed to have unilaterally rebranded the waterway as the “Trump Strait,” citing it as part of a broader strategy following his assertion that military operations had neutralized Iran’s nuclear capabilities. Trump’s rhetoric at the rally underscored a persistent effort to project American influence through official nomenclature, even when met with resistance from tech leadership.
