The ETF Investor Study 2026, conducted by the Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts, highlights a significant demographic shift. While ETF ownership among men grew by only one percentage point, female participation jumped from 21 to 27 percent. According to study director Brian Mattmann, these products are increasingly positioned to replace traditional investment funds as the standard choice for Swiss portfolios, particularly among those under 45.
Financial literacy among women also climbed, rising six percentage points to 44 percent. Despite this progress, a 20-point knowledge gap persists compared to men. Much of this engagement is linked to "FinFluencers"; 77 percent of women who interact with financial creators report a better understanding of investments, with over half stating these creators directly influenced their purchase decisions.
Market dynamics are evolving alongside this user base. While passive strategies remain dominant, actively managed ETFs now represent nearly half of all newly launched products in Switzerland. Furthermore, the survey of 3,572 individuals reveals a growing appetite for automation, with over 110,000 active ETF savings plans now managing more than 800 million Swiss francs, a segment currently dominated by investors under the age of 45.
