Speaking at the 'Freedom 250' reception, Rubio emphasized that despite occasional policy disagreements, the two nations share fundamental interests, particularly regarding a "free and open" Indo-Pacific. He argued that preventing any single nation from claiming dominance over international shipping remains a cornerstone of this cooperation. Rubio, currently on his second visit to the country in three months, characterized India as an influential and advanced partner that upholds the democratic principles and rule of law central to American values.
This diplomatic outreach occurs as the two nations navigate a complicated economic landscape. The Trump administration has expressed frustration over high duties on US exports to India, while New Delhi remains committed to purchasing affordable Russian oil. Despite these tensions, Rubio signaled optimism regarding a bilateral trade deal, noting that officials are close to a final agreement with only a few technical points remaining. During his two-day trip, the Secretary of State is expected to tour Reliance Industries' refinery in Jamnagar and hold discussions with prominent industry figures, including Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran and Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani.
