Cornell President Faces Faculty Backlash Amid Sexual Assault Allegations

A former Cornell student has accused university president Michael Kotlikoff of casting doubt on her sexual assault report, fueling a growing crisis of confidence at the Ivy League school. The allegations, detailed in a letter sent to faculty leaders, arrive as professors debate a potential no-confidence vote in the administration.

The student, identified in a lawsuit as Jane Doe, claims her sorority president relayed that Kotlikoff questioned why she waited a month to report the October 2024 assault. According to the letter, this interaction left her feeling unsupported and disbelieved. Cornell officials contest this version of events; Chris Schaffer, the dean of faculty, stated that another official present at the meeting recalled Kotlikoff asking why witnesses had not used the school’s anonymous tip line earlier, particularly as rumors circulated on social media.

This dispute compounds pressure on the university leadership as the Faculty Senate prepares to vote on a resolution regarding their handling of sexual assault cases and fraternity oversight. While professor Noah Tamarkin, a sponsor of the resolution, argued the incident underscores a lack of trust in current management, independent investigator Sally Yates has launched an expansive review into the institution’s disciplinary practices. Yates, a former Justice Department official, emphasized that her investigation will examine the university's response to the Jane Doe case alongside broader oversight of campus safety, pledging to follow evidence wherever it leads.
