While the $700 billion figure represents total potential demand under ideal conditions, analysts project a more conservative base-case growth to $170 billion by 2031. Tokenized gold is currently the fastest-growing segment, having quintupled in value since late 2024 to reach approximately $6 billion. Products like PAX Gold and Tether Gold allow investors to trade digital claims while the physical metal remains in secure custody.
Retail interest is significant, with nearly 90 percent of surveyed investors open to digital gold under the right conditions. Crucially, digital platforms appear to be expanding the total market rather than cannibalizing existing sales; 65 percent of latent demand comes from individuals who previously held no gold at all. The World Gold Council aims to accelerate this adoption through a standardized 'Gold as a Service' infrastructure, which would harmonize custody and regulatory processes across fragmented providers. Success hinges on overcoming hurdles like limited transparency and the lack of unified legal frameworks, particularly as new products like PAXGy attempt to integrate gold into institutional lending markets.
