Mother Gifted Shotgun Used in Oregon School Massacre

Shauntai Nickerson purchased a Maverick 88 pump-action shotgun last August, presenting the weapon to her 16-year-old son, Griffin J. John II, as a birthday gift. Last Thursday, the teenager used that same firearm to kill three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon.

The shooter, a former special needs student at the school, initiated his rampage by firing at a passing pickup truck before shattering the locked glass doors to gain entry. Once inside, he targeted the first classroom on the left, where nine people were present. The attack claimed the lives of 25-year-old teacher Megan Lambert and three children aged 5, 8, and 11, including 5-year-old Rhoam Summer. Two others, a 7-year-old girl and a 54-year-old teacher, sustained injuries during the encounter.

The violence ended when Kaylub Giamanco, a local father whose daughters attend the school, intervened. After witnessing the initial shooting, Giamanco pursued the teenager into the building. As a staff member struggled with the gunman for control of the weapon, Giamanco shot and killed the 16-year-old. As investigators search for a motive, families of the victims have retained legal counsel to scrutinize school safety protocols and the circumstances surrounding the teenager's access to the firearm. Prosecutors are currently evaluating potential liability for the school district regarding the failure to prevent the breach.
