JD Vance Reframes 'Indentured Servant' Rhetoric on H-1B Workers

Facing backlash for labeling H-1B visa holders as "indentured servants," U.S. Vice President JD Vance pivoted during a Michigan town hall to frame his comments as a critique of corporate exploitation rather than an attack on immigrants, while highlighting his own family ties to South India.

Addressing a direct challenge from naturalized citizen Niv Agaram, Vance conceded that his rhetoric on immigration has been imperfect. He argued that the H-1B system grants employers excessive leverage, effectively tethering foreign workers to companies in ways that domestic employees are not. According to the Vice President, the focus of his criticism is on firms that displace American workers to hire foreign talent, leaving the latter vulnerable to workplace abuse.

To soften the political impact of these remarks, Vance invoked his wife, Usha Vance, and his Indian in-laws. He emphasized that his goal is to balance the needs of American workers with a system that remains fair to those seeking opportunities. This defense follows significant friction, including an Indian government rebuke calling his earlier terminology "deeply offensive." The administration continues to push for tighter oversight of visa programs, recently suspending several firms from green card pathways, which Vance characterized as an effort to prevent companies from operating as "visa mills" that undermine local labor markets.
