The proposal surfaced Monday, emerging as a direct response to a Sunday announcement by artificial intelligence firm Anthropic. Anthropic revealed plans to commit 5% of its own shares to a newly formed public benefit fund, a move aimed at balancing corporate profit with social impact. Musk’s reaction was characteristically brief: he recommended distributing equity directly to the public rather than through intermediary funds.
SpaceX shares closed at $146.03 last Friday. While Musk labeled this gift the first of many, the practical path to transferring securities to minors remains unaddressed. This development coincides with rising public skepticism toward AI, as recent AP-NORC polling indicates 64% of Americans believe the technology is advancing too rapidly. Despite previous calls from industry leaders—including Musk, Dario Amodei, and Sam Altman—to decelerate development, global competition and political pressures continue to complicate any coordinated industry slowdown.
