The prospect of a three-way summit emerged following reports of a suggestion by the Russian president to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Reaction from Kyiv was swift, with Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha dismissing the value of a summit excluding his nation. Sybiha argued that meaningful progress requires direct involvement from Ukraine, the United States, and Russia, warning that engaging China could inadvertently provide Russia with the diplomatic leverage to prolong hostilities.
Despite the friction, the Kremlin maintains that any final settlement necessitates Ukrainian participation. The diplomatic landscape remains frozen, as the last US-mediated negotiations occurred in February. With both Moscow and Kyiv remaining entrenched in their positions, the possibility of a breakthrough in China hinges on whether the involved powers can bridge the gap between preliminary discussions and a concrete path toward a peace agreement.
