WFP Cuts Gaza Food Aid as Funding Shortages Ignite Hunger Risks

Five hundred thousand Palestinians face an immediate loss of food assistance as the World Food Programme slashes its monthly support from 1.6 million to 1.1 million recipients. This reduction, driven by a critical $450 million funding shortfall, strikes as winter approaches and hunger grips two-thirds of the territory.

The agency’s decision forces a sharp contraction of essential services: daily hot meal production has dropped from 250,000 to 150,000, and 75,000 families will see their cash support and food rations halved. For many displaced families living in temporary shelters without cooking facilities, these meals serve as their only reliable sustenance. In some locations, aid distribution has slowed to a frequency of every other day.

Carl Skau, the WFP’s acting executive director, characterized the situation as brutal. During a recent visit, he noted that the lack of basic infrastructure and safety renders recovery efforts nearly impossible, even under the shadow of a ceasefire. While the agreement reached last year aimed to initiate reconstruction, it has yet to translate into improved living conditions for the two million people residing in Gaza. Israeli forces maintain control over 60% of the territory, and ongoing airstrikes continue to disrupt the supply chains necessary for humanitarian operations.

The Hamas-run media office labeled the cuts catastrophic, warning that the reduction could accelerate famine. For residents like Sabrine Kuhail in the Nuseirat camp, the loss of aid represents a deepening of the exhaustion and deprivation that have defined life for years. Without a significant influx of international capital, the WFP faces the prospect of further scaling back programs, leaving vulnerable households with virtually no safety net as temperatures drop.
