Patterson, assigned to the 6th Combat Training Squadron, Detachment 2, was one of four military personnel participating in the demonstration. Witnesses reported that he lost control during his descent, falling from the stadium's ceiling rafters. Medical personnel treated him on the field for ten minutes before transporting him to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The tragedy interrupted the "Salute to Armed Forces and Veterans" ceremony, forcing a sudden silence over the crowd of 23,297. While the American Conference officials and university representatives met to review the incident, the game proceeded as scheduled. An investigation into the circumstances of the fall is currently underway.
