Trump Accuses Zelensky of Prolonging Ukraine War Amid Sanctions Waiver

Donald Trump claimed on Sunday that Volodymyr Zelensky has no desire to conclude the four-year conflict with Russia, asserting that the Ukrainian president is emboldened by European financial support. The remarks follow Trump’s decision to waive sanctions on Russian diesel, a move aimed at curbing rising US fuel prices.

Trump Accuses Zelensky of Prolonging Ukraine War Amid Sanctions Waiver

The former president, writing on his Truth Social platform, defended his recent executive order to bypass sanctions mandated by legislation associated with the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Trump stated that he is currently negotiating a peace deal and fears that strictly enforcing these measures would foolishly alienate Moscow from the bargaining table. While he insists that significant progress is being made on the conflict and ongoing hostage negotiations, the White House has yet to clarify which specific documents or agreements he referenced.

This shift in policy has ignited a sharp diplomatic rift between Washington and Kyiv. Trump alleged that Ukraine is intentionally targeting Russian refineries to destabilize global diesel markets, a tactic he claims is designed to damage the Republican Party's standing ahead of the November 3 election. With voters increasingly frustrated by the surge in energy costs since the Iran war began, the administration is prioritizing fuel market stability over the previous strategy of economic pressure on the Kremlin. Trump further suggested that his leniency toward Russia serves a broader strategic goal: ensuring Moscow remains detached from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
