Iran Issues Warning as Maritime Attacks Spike Near Arabian Peninsula

Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, warned Sunday that Tehran has finalized a new retaliatory strategy for any further U.S. or Israeli strikes. The official stated that this operational plan would deviate from past tactical norms, promising a response far more severe than previous military engagements.

The warning arrives as regional maritime authorities document a surge in violence against commercial shipping. The UK Maritime Trade Operations reported that a tugboat northeast of the United Arab Emirates was struck by two unidentified projectiles on Sunday. This incident follows a series of hostile encounters: a liquefied natural gas tanker near Yemen exchanged fire with a skiff on Saturday, and a vessel northeast of Saudi Arabia reported a rocket-propelled grenade attack on Friday.

Market reactions were immediate, with Brent crude futures climbing to $110 per barrel, marking a significant 3.7% gain. U.S. West Texas Intermediate also surged, closing at $101.41. These fluctuations reflect broader anxiety following missile and drone interceptions over Saudi Arabia, including an attempt on the Yanbu oil terminal. While President Donald Trump stated in a recent interview that he does not intend to deploy ground troops or utilize nuclear capabilities against Iran, the combination of diplomatic posturing and kinetic activity at sea has pushed regional tensions to a precarious threshold.
