Tesla on Autopilot Strikes Police Vehicle After Driver Falls Asleep

A 22-year-old Sacramento man slammed his Tesla into a stationary California Highway Patrol vehicle on Interstate 80 late Tuesday, leaving two officers hospitalized. The driver admitted to authorities that he had fallen asleep at the wheel while relying on the car’s Full Self-Driving software to navigate the highway.

The collision occurred shortly before midnight near Fairfield, where officers were managing the scene of an earlier fatal accident. Despite a perimeter marked by flares, traffic cones, and activated emergency lights, the Tesla bypassed these warnings and struck the patrol car from behind. Dashcam footage released by the California Highway Patrol captures the vehicle approaching the restricted zone at speed without braking before the impact.

While the Tesla driver emerged uninjured, the two officers inside the patrol vehicle sustained serious injuries and required emergency medical treatment. This incident highlights the persistent gap between the marketing of driver-assistance features and their technical limitations. Although Tesla labels the software Full Self-Driving, the system remains a supervised feature that mandates constant driver attention. Investigators are now reviewing the crash to determine the extent of the driver's negligence and the potential failures of the vehicle's automated safety protocols.
