US Coast Guard Rescues 16 People Stranded in Pacific Ocean

Floating 140 miles west of Ensenada, 16 people were pulled from the Pacific Ocean in a predawn rescue operation Friday. US Coast Guard officials, working alongside Mexican authorities, launched an urgent search for additional survivors after a survivor reported that as many as 27 individuals were originally on the missing boat.

Petty Officer Chris Sappey confirmed the rescue began around 1 a.m. PT. Rescuers encountered a harrowing scene: individuals drifting in open water without a vessel in sight. The survivors were transported to San Diego hospitals for medical care. While the exact circumstances remain under investigation, the incident reflects a growing trend of migrants attempting dangerous maritime crossings to bypass fortified land borders.

These voyages, often facilitated by smugglers using small, overloaded pangas, frequently end in tragedy. Previous incidents include a 2023 capsize near San Diego that claimed eight lives and a 2022 wreck where a vessel carrying 32 people disintegrated in powerful surf. As the search continues with Coast Guard helicopters and cutters, the lack of a recovered vessel complicates efforts to determine exactly how many others remain in the water.
