EIB backs €18m modernization for Tyrol’s Zugspitze resort

A €3.5 million loan from the European Investment Bank is fueling an €18 million overhaul of the Tiroler Zugspitzbahn, the cable car and ski resort complex in Ehrwald. The project aims to modernize infrastructure at the base of Germany’s highest mountain, enhancing visitor capacity and operational efficiency near the Austrian-German border.

The investment package includes the construction of an underground parking facility with 85 spaces, a redesigned boarding area for the cable car, and comprehensive upgrades to ski slopes and snowmaking systems. These improvements are part of a broader strategy by the family-owned operator to maintain the resort's competitive edge in the Alpine tourism market. Managing Director Franz Dengg emphasized that the capital is essential for long-term development, balancing guest comfort with more efficient, modern operations.

This funding is facilitated through Hypo Tirol Bank, part of a larger €100 million partnership between the EIB and the regional lender. By utilizing intermediated loans, the EIB channels capital through local institutions that possess deep market knowledge. EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer and Tyrol Governor Anton Mattle inspected the site today, noting that the arrangement serves as a model for how regional businesses can leverage European financing to drive economic development and infrastructure growth.
