The restoration, spanning from January 2024 to September 2026, replaced the school’s damaged roof and overhauled its heating, ventilation, and electrical systems. Beyond basic structural repairs, the project integrated critical safety features, including improved fire warning systems and enhanced accessibility for children with special educational needs. The funding was primarily drawn from the European Investment Bank’s €340 million Ukraine Recovery Programme, which contributed €1.54 million, supplemented by €451,000 from the Zhytomyr regional budget.
For the local community, the reopening serves as a vital anchor for families displaced by the ongoing conflict. Officials, including EIB Vice-President Karl Nehammer and Deputy Finance Minister Olga Zykova, characterized the project as a strategic investment in communal resilience. The initiative is part of a broader push across the Zhytomyr region, where 20 social infrastructure sites—ranging from hospitals to preschools—are undergoing similar upgrades. By aligning international financing with local execution, the project aims to restore a sense of normalcy for students and staff while demonstrating the feasibility of rebuilding to modern standards despite wartime constraints.
