India’s Green Ammonia Pivot Secures ADB and Japan Backing

A former natural gas-dependent fertilizer facility in India is set for a radical transformation into one of the world’s largest green ammonia production sites. Supported by a $100 million loan from the Asian Development Bank and Japan, the project aims to decouple essential fertilizer production from fossil fuel reliance.

The initiative marks the inaugural investment under the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience (ACCEL) program. By retrofitting an existing plant, AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited plans to reach an annual capacity of 1.1 million tons. This shift addresses the significant environmental footprint inherent in traditional ammonia manufacturing while maintaining the supply chains vital to global agriculture.

ADB President Masato Kanda noted that the scale of this project could fundamentally reshape industry standards, turning energy security commitments into tangible market growth. The funding, channeled through the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2 and administered by the Japan International Cooperation Agency, serves as a test case for the ACCEL framework. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama emphasized that this move aligns with Japan’s broader POWERR Asia strategy, which seeks to insulate regional supply chains from volatility by diversifying energy sources and fostering sustainable industrial practices.
