African Development Bank Backs Djibouti Trade with $8 Million Facility

Djibouti’s industrial and green energy sectors stand to gain a vital lifeline as the African Development Bank Board of Directors approved an $8 million trade guarantee facility on 7 October 2026. This five-year arrangement aims to bridge critical financing gaps for local businesses importing machinery and essential production inputs.

The facility functions by providing guarantees of up to 100% to confirming banks, effectively de-risking international trade instruments such as letters of credit issued by Exim Bank Djibouti. By reducing these financial hurdles, the program enables large enterprises and small-to-medium businesses—including those led by women—to secure the equipment necessary for manufacturing and telecommunications development.

Beyond industrial capacity, the funding addresses immediate needs for food and nutritional security by facilitating the import of essential goods. The initiative aligns with the African Development Bank’s 2023–2027 country strategy, which prioritizes socio-economic infrastructure in energy and transport. Exim Bank Djibouti Managing Director Jacky Kayiteshonga noted that the partnership integrates with the wider regional strategy of the Exim Group, aiming to bolster trade transactions across East Africa throughout the facility's five-year term.
