White House Press Secretary Under Fire Over China Remarks and Credentials

Recalling her time living in Beijing, newly appointed White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia dismissed China’s global standing by citing a lack of 'proper toilets.' The controversial remarks arrived just days into her tenure, compounding scrutiny regarding her legal credentials and her transition into the high-profile communications role.

Zacharia, 41, shared the anecdote during an interview with right-wing influencer Jack Posobiec, framing her 2016 experience as a rejection of the then-prevailing narrative that China was poised to surpass the United States. Her comments surface as the administration navigates a complex diplomatic landscape, with President Donald Trump repeatedly touting a 'great relationship' with Chinese President Xi Jinping following their recent summits on trade and artificial intelligence.

Beyond her geopolitical commentary, Zacharia faces mounting questions about her professional background. While she has identified herself as a lawyer and general counsel for a California-based nonprofit, she provided an inconclusive response when pressed on where she passed the bar exam. She explained that while she once registered for the test, she became 'distracted and overwhelmed' by a move to China and subsequently did not pursue licensing upon her return due to the birth of her child. Zacharia succeeded Karoline Leavitt, who resigned in August, and held her first limited press briefing this past Tuesday.
