India Rebukes US Lawmaker Over Electoral Roll Criticism

Indian Ambassador to the US Vinay Mohan Kwatra has labeled Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal’s recent criticism of India’s electoral process an unacceptable interference in internal affairs. The diplomatic pushback follows Jayapal’s public accusations that New Delhi is mirroring American efforts to undermine democratic voting rights through mass voter disenfranchisement.

Jayapal, a Democrat representing Washington state, sparked the controversy by citing the removal of millions of names from Indian electoral rolls. She characterized the deletion of roughly 130 million entries as a coordinated purge and expressed solidarity with non-violent protests emerging in response. Drawing a parallel to domestic US politics, the congresswoman suggested the Indian government is employing a playbook similar to tactics used by the Trump administration to weaken democratic participation.

In response, Kwatra defended India’s institutional integrity, asserting that the nation maintains a longstanding record of free and fair elections. He extended an invitation for dialogue, suggesting that the congresswoman’s concerns stem from fundamental misconceptions about the country's governance. The Election Commission of India maintains that the Special Intensive Revision process is a routine administrative necessity, not a political maneuver. According to official data, 7.2 crore names were removed during the first two phases across 13 states, with an additional 6.16 crore deletions in the ongoing third phase. Election officials argue these adjustments are essential to identify dead, duplicate, or ineligible entries, noting that citizens can contest exclusions through the standard claims and objections process.
