Following their release from Tilak Marg Police Station, the parents issued a 24-hour ultimatum to the government, demanding the gubernatorial appointment be suspended pending a full investigation. The family specifically requested public disclosure of location details and call records for both Ajay Kumar and Dushyant Kumar from September 18–19, 2022. They argue that until the CBI clarifies the identity of the "VIP" linked to the 2022 murder, such high-level appointments remain deeply suspicious to the people of Uttarakhand.
Opposition leaders, including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, condemned the pre-dawn detention as an act of cowardice. Gandhi urged President Droupadi Murmu to intervene, questioning why a person under public scrutiny was elevated to a constitutional post while grieving parents were silenced. Shashi Tharoor and Pawan Khera also criticized the move, describing the treatment of the family as an affront to democratic rights. Meanwhile, in Dehradun, former Chief Minister Harish Rawat was detained while attempting to submit a memorandum regarding the appointment. While the Uttarakhand police maintain that the three primary accused—Pulkit Arya, Saurabh Bhaskar, and Ankit Gupta—were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2025, the family insists the investigation remains incomplete regarding the involvement of political figures.
