BJP Accuses Opposition of Orchestrating Regime Change via Civil Unrest

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra has launched a scathing attack on Rahul Gandhi and civil rights activists, characterizing ongoing demonstrations against electoral roll revisions as a calculated push for regime change. Patra dismissed Gandhi’s comparison of the protests to a divine cosmic dance, labeling the movement an unpatriotic agitation.

The political friction centers on the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls, which has sparked widespread protests led by the INDIA bloc and various student groups. While Rahul Gandhi defended the unrest as an organic, unstructured process—likening it to Lord Shiva’s Tandav—Patra rejected the metaphor entirely. He argued that the demonstrations are not driven by genuine electoral concerns but by a deliberate attempt to subvert democratic processes and incite instability.

Patra’s criticism gained momentum following comments by activist Prashant Bhushan, who explicitly framed the opposition’s movement as a fight for regime change. The BJP leader seized on this admission, asserting that the opposition seeks to bypass legitimate ballot-box mandates in favor of anarchy. He further accused participants, including student activists like AISA’s Neha Bora, of acting as puppets for foreign interests, specifically referencing their mentions of recent unrest in Bangladesh as a template for Indian demonstrations. Patra warned that the protests would remain contained, insisting that the Indian public remains committed to constitutional electoral cycles over the tactics currently displayed at Jantar Mantar.
