Singapore and Tamil Nadu deepen digital ties with Chennai data centre

Rolling pineapples to the sounds of Nadaswaram music, Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated CapitaLand’s first data centre in Chennai on Thursday. The ceremony underscored a growing strategic pivot toward shared digital infrastructure between the two regions.

The facility arrives as demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence infrastructure surges across India. For Singapore, the investment reinforces its position as the largest foreign investor in Tamil Nadu, a state with which it shares deep historical and economic roots. Singapore High Commissioner to India Simon Wong described the collaboration as a fusion of traditions, signaling a commitment to long-term business partnerships that transcend pure finance.

This infrastructure project follows a series of high-level diplomatic engagements between the two governments. Earlier in October, High Commissioner Wong met with Chief Minister Vijay to discuss strengthening ties, specifically highlighting the potential for future development on the current foundation of bilateral cooperation. As both nations look to capitalize on the digital economy, this data centre serves as a physical manifestation of their expanding commercial alignment.
