Jayant Sinha credits trade deals and currency for India's GDP upgrades

India’s recent economic growth upgrades by global agencies are driven by a surge in exports, according to former Union Minister of State for Finance Jayant Sinha. Speaking in Delhi, he identified strategic free trade agreements and a softer rupee as the primary catalysts for the country’s strong performance and job creation.

Global institutions, including the IMF, World Bank, and OECD, have recently raised India's GDP growth projections to 7 per cent or higher for the 2026–27 fiscal year. Sinha highlighted that trade pacts with the UK, the European Union, and the UAE serve as critical game changers, providing Indian businesses with expanded access to international markets. These agreements, coupled with the rupee’s depreciation, have effectively fortified India's export engine against a backdrop of sluggish global trends.

Beyond external trade, Sinha praised the Reserve Bank of India and the central government for maintaining a delicate balance between robust growth and inflation. He noted that despite persistent global price pressures, the authorities remain vigilant in their monetary policy approach. According to Sinha, this coordination ensures that the current economic momentum remains sustainable while keeping inflation within manageable limits.
