Rawat, accompanied by senior Congress officials including Harak Singh Rawat and Pritam Singh, insisted the group had no intention of staging a demonstration. He stated their primary objective was to formally challenge Gautam’s constitutional appointment, citing persistent public speculation that the politician is the unnamed 'VIP' referenced during the investigation into the 2022 killing of the Rishikesh receptionist. The former Chief Minister maintained that until a central agency clears Gautam of these suspicions, his elevation to a governorship remains an affront to the victim's family.
This confrontation follows a tense scene in New Delhi, where the parents of Ankita Bhandari were briefly detained by police during a sit-in at India Gate. The family has consistently demanded the identification of the mysterious 'VIP' guest mentioned in the case, alleging that influential figures were shielded during the initial probe. While Pulkit Arya and two associates were sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder in May 2025, the family claims the appointment of individuals linked to the discourse surrounding the case undermines the pursuit of justice. Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have both condemned the state's handling of the grieving parents, labeling the detentions as an attempt to suppress accountability.
