Sexual Assault Allegations at University of Chicago Fraternity

A 21-year-old woman has reported being sexually assaulted inside an Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity house at the University of Chicago, sparking a police investigation. The incident occurred during a weekend party, with witnesses alleging that bystanders cheered outside the bathroom door as the attack took place early Sunday morning.

The survivor, who is not a student at the university, told police she was found in a basement bathroom in a state of diminished consciousness. Her friend, Mia Lara, reported having to force her way into the room, where she encountered a man with the victim while a group of men outside the door chanted, "When's my turn?" The suspect, also described as a non-student, allegedly claimed the encounter was consensual before fleeing the premises. University officials confirmed they have identified a person of interest, though Chicago police have yet to file formal charges.

Alpha Epsilon Pi’s national organization denies any member involvement or complicity. Spokesperson Jonathan Pierce stated that fraternity members intervened once alerted to the situation, ejected the suspect, and terminated the event. This incident follows recent national scrutiny regarding sexual violence at elite institutions, including ongoing legal battles concerning allegations at Cornell University. The University of Chicago continues to cooperate with law enforcement while reviewing the conduct surrounding the gathering.
