RBI Weighs Emergency Rate Hike as Wholesale Inflation Surges

The Reserve Bank of India may abandon its scheduled timeline for monetary tightening, with analysts at Union Bank of India warning of an unscheduled interest rate hike. Faced with a weakening rupee and inflation figures that have outpaced market expectations, the central bank is under mounting pressure to intervene immediately.

RBI Weighs Emergency Rate Hike as Wholesale Inflation Surges

The prospect of an inter-meeting move follows a 25-basis-point increase earlier this month, as the RBI signals a willingness to defend the rupee through aggressive monetary policy. Union Bank analysts anticipate a potential 50-basis-point hike during the December meeting, should the current volatility persist. This urgency stems from a sharp spike in India's wholesale inflation, which climbed to 11.39% in September, far exceeding the 10.18% forecast by market observers.

Driving these figures are broad-based cost increases across the manufacturing sector, including basic metals, chemicals, and textiles, alongside a 25.87% surge in fuel prices linked to global crude oil disruptions. With wholesale inflation likely to remain in double digits throughout the near term, Union Bank projects an average rate of 10.5% for the 2027 fiscal year. This outlook remains tethered to global oil benchmarks, with researchers warning that any sustained climb above $100 per barrel could force the RBI into even more restrictive territory, further straining business investment and borrowing costs across the economy.
