BJP demands action against Congress MP over JNU harassment findings

A delegation of BJP women parliamentarians has petitioned Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla to intervene following the dismissal of Congress MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam from Jawaharlal Nehru University. The move comes after an internal committee substantiated sexual harassment complaints filed by 11 female students against the lawmaker.

Bansuri Swaraj, leading the delegation, accused the Congress leadership of shielding Akoijam despite the university’s October 9, 2026, order terminating his professorship under the Prevention of Sexual Harassment (POSH) Act. The BJP members challenged top Congress figures, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, to reconcile their public rhetoric on women’s rights with their silence regarding the findings against their colleague from Inner Manipur.

"The internal committee found the complaints to be truthful and substantiated by facts," Swaraj stated during a press conference. Beyond the appeal to the Speaker, the party has escalated the issue to President Droupadi Murmu and the National Commission for Women. The legal fallout continues separately, with the Delhi Police registering an FIR on October 11 at the Vasant Kunj North station based on a complaint from JNU’s Chief Security Officer. While Akoijam has previously claimed procedural failures regarding the inquiry report, the BJP maintains that an individual facing such findings has no moral standing to continue serving in the House.
