Germany Doubles Lebanon Military Aid to €10 Million

More than 50,000 Lebanese Armed Forces personnel and their relatives remain displaced, prompting Germany to double its commitment to a UN-led support program. An additional €5 million injection brings total German funding to €10 million, aimed at securing basic necessities for families while bolstering the military’s capacity for regional recovery.

The funding, channeled through the United Nations Development Programme, will sustain non-military aid through 2028. Beyond addressing the immediate housing, food, and healthcare needs of soldiers, the capital provides specialized equipment for clearing rubble and explosive ordnance in affected communities. This support arrives as the Lebanese Armed Forces assume expanded responsibilities following the 2025 termination of the UNIFIL mandate under resolution 2790.

Since the program’s launch in December 2024, initial contributions have already stabilized the supply of subsidized food across 144 military commissaries. Abdallah Al Dardari, UN Assistant Secretary General, stated that the initiative remains a vital signal of solidarity. By reinforcing the military's civil-military cooperation efforts, the program seeks to preserve institutional trust during a period of intense political and financial instability. Germany continues to coordinate this aid alongside partners including Japan, France, and the European Union, while separately directing over €6 million toward police and public service restoration in southern regions.
