IsDB and IFAD Launch $750 Million Rural Development Initiative

The Islamic Development Bank and the International Fund for Agricultural Development have committed to mobilizing US$750 million in co-financing to transform rural economies. By targeting the "first mile" of food systems, the partnership seeks to bridge the gap between agricultural production and long-term financial viability for rural communities.

This agreement marks an expansion of a collaboration dating back to 1980, during which the two institutions have already co-financed 29 projects totaling US$1.45 billion. The new target focuses on integrating agribusiness value chains, enhancing market access, and fostering financial inclusion. IFAD President Alvaro Lario emphasized that the investment aims to stabilize incomes and create jobs, moving beyond simple production to support the broader business ecosystem.

To achieve these goals, the IsDB Group is deploying a diverse suite of financial instruments. Affiliates including the Islamic Corporation for the Development of the Private Sector, the International Islamic Trade Finance Corporation, and the Islamic Corporation for the Insurance of Investment and Export Credit will provide specialized tools for trade finance, risk mitigation, and private sector support. Beyond immediate economic goals, the joint action plan prioritizes climate adaptation and sustainable water management to ensure that rural infrastructure remains resilient against environmental pressures. Dr. Muhammad Al Jasser, Chairman of the IsDB Group, noted that the initiative aims to leverage this collective expertise to drive systemic change across shared member countries.
