The financing agreement with Cadasa, the public consortium managing Asturias' water resources, catalyzes a broader investment package exceeding €211 million. Planned technical upgrades focus on critical system bottlenecks: doubling the capacity of the Lieres-Espinierlla pipeline, establishing a new pumping station on the Narcea River, and integrating the municipalities of Valdés and Pravia into the central supply grid. These works are designed to accommodate shifting climate patterns that threaten traditional water availability.
Beyond the primary loan, the project incorporates a €10.5 million grant via the European Commission’s Just Transition Mechanism. Alejandro Calvo, the Regional Minister for Mobility and Environment, noted that this capital enables the region to align its water management policies with stringent European sustainability directives. For the EIB, the initiative aligns with its broader Water Resilience Programme, a €15 billion effort to modernize European infrastructure by 2027. Gilles Badot, EIB Director of Operations, emphasized that this modernization is vital for maintaining regional competitiveness and protecting natural resources against increasing environmental volatility.
