Africa Scales $10 Billion AI Initiative to Drive Employment

With over 300 million young Africans entering the workforce over the next decade, the African Development Bank and the UNDP are shifting their $10 billion AI initiative from policy commitments to ground-level implementation, aiming to unlock 25 million new jobs by 2035 through targeted productivity investments.

The partnership, which emerged following the Nairobi AI Forum, seeks to bridge the gap between continental economic projections and local project execution. By targeting five countries initially and expanding to 20 by late 2027, the coalition aims to channel capital into sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and health—areas identified as holding 58% of the continent's potential AI-driven economic gains.

Keyzom Ngodup Massally of the UNDP and Solomon Quaynor of the African Development Bank are spearheading the effort to align public and private capital with country-specific needs. The strategy relies on a three-stage framework: conducting initial productivity analyses, developing investment-ready projects, and utilizing a dedicated platform to connect these opportunities with regional and international backers. While the initiative does not guarantee the $1 trillion in GDP growth forecasted in the Bank's 2025 report, it provides the structural foundation necessary to turn technical potential into tangible employment and industrial competitiveness.
