Police detained the actor on Saturday, citing violations of the Immigration Act. Authorities allege that Khan breached the conditions of his Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) status by engaging in political agitation, an activity restricted for non-citizens. Khan, who shared an image from inside a police van during his detention, maintained that his presence at the protest was an exercise of his rights as a resident of the city. He questioned the restrictions placed on freedom of movement and the suppression of public dissent, stating he attended simply to witness the state's response to the gathering.
The crackdown follows intense pressure from Bharatiya Janata Party leader Kirit Somaiya, who formally requested the actor's deportation. Somaiya submitted evidence to police regarding Khan’s speeches and previous public remarks, characterizing the actor's behavior as political extremism. Somaiya argued that holding an OCI card does not grant immunity for participating in protests against the state, asserting that such conduct violates visa conditions. As of now, the actor faces immediate removal from the country as officials process the legal implications of his involvement in the demonstration.
