Fugro Secures €150 Million EIB Loan for Remote Maritime Expansion

The European Investment Bank has granted a €150 million loan to Dutch geo-data firm Fugro, financing the deployment of 25 uncrewed surface vessels. This initiative aims to modernize offshore site surveying and infrastructure monitoring while significantly reducing the carbon footprint associated with subsea data collection across European energy projects.

The financing supports a phased rollout of second-generation vessels designed to perform complex seabed surveys and technical studies without requiring onboard personnel. By integrating these medium-sized, long-range craft with underwater robotics, the company can transmit critical subsea data to remote operating centers in real-time. This transition allows for a more flexible investment strategy that aligns the expansion of the fleet with evolving market demand for offshore wind and cable infrastructure.

Beyond fleet growth, the capital will fund research into advanced remote sensing and robotics. Fugro estimates that its uncrewed vessels consume up to 90% less fuel than traditional survey ships, directly contributing to lower greenhouse-gas emissions. CEO Mark Heine described the backing as a validation of the company's digitalization strategy, while EIB Vice-President Robert de Groot noted that the investment strengthens Europe’s ability to secure critical offshore energy assets through improved technological capabilities.
