The controversy surfaced following a report by Popular Information indicating that Zacharia is not licensed to practice law in any U.S. state or the District of Columbia. Despite her public branding, including an Instagram bio identifying her as a lawyer, officials at the State Bar of California confirmed they have no record of her under her current or maiden names. When questioned by reporters regarding where she passed the bar exam, Zacharia deflected, referencing her time working in China without providing specific verification.
Zacharia earned her law degree from Pepperdine Caruso School of Law in 2011. Her official biography claims she practiced international transaction law, and a press release from NovaRed Mining Inc. once cited her experience as outside counsel for the World Bank and the International Finance Corporation during her tenure at the Beijing-based Zhong Lun Law Firm. However, the firm and other organizations linked to her resume have not responded to inquiries regarding her specific legal roles.
The Campaign for Accountability filed a formal complaint with the State Bar of California on Wednesday, urging an investigation into whether Zacharia violated state law by misrepresenting herself as an attorney. Executive Director Michelle Kuppersmith noted that, under California regulations, claiming to be a lawyer without a license can constitute a criminal offense. While the White House continues to defend her appointment, describing her as whip-smart and uniquely qualified, the lack of transparency regarding her credentials remains a point of friction for the administration.
