The buyer contacted authorities after realizing the contents of the box were not antique books or trinkets, but active military hardware from the 1940s. Austin Police Department officers established a security perimeter around the residence, evacuating neighbors as a precaution while awaiting the bomb squad. Technicians utilized X-ray imaging to inspect the metal casings, confirming that at least three of the items were Mk 2 fragmentation grenades containing live explosives.
While the devices remained stable inside their container, officials warned that the 80-year-old ordnance could have detonated if mishandled. Bomb squad experts successfully secured and removed the grenades from the home for disposal. Police confirmed the buyer faced no legal repercussions, characterizing the incident as an entirely accidental discovery rather than a criminal matter. The department later praised the bomb squad for their steady handling of the volatile, decades-old explosives.
