Canada Targets Year-End Trade Deal with India Amid US Pivot

Facing rising protectionism from the United States, Canada is aggressively pivoting its economic strategy toward New Delhi. Foreign Minister Anita Anand, currently on a high-level visit to India, announced that Ottawa aims to finalize a landmark Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement with the world’s sixth-largest economy before the year concludes.

Anand’s diplomatic mission, which runs through October 15, marks her third trip to India since June of last year, signaling a sustained effort to thaw bilateral relations. During meetings with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, the ministers reviewed a broad agenda spanning energy, defense, and investment, emphasizing that the partnership is anchored in deep people-to-people connections as much as commerce.

Beyond the immediate trade deal, Ottawa has set a goal to double its non-US trade volume over the next decade. To support this shift, Canada is prioritizing ten national infrastructure projects—ranging from port development to small modular reactors—intended to bolster domestic capacity and secure Canada's standing as a leading G7 economy. Having signed over 20 international agreements in the past year, the government is moving to insulate its economy from shifting American trade policies by diversifying its global network.
