Speaking outside the Harkishan Singh Surjeet Bhawan in New Delhi, Baby characterized the statutory immunity as a dangerous departure from democratic norms. He emphasized that presidential immunity is strictly limited to an official’s term in office, whereas the current provisions for election officials create a state of impunity that requires urgent parliamentary intervention. His remarks came during a broader discussion on institutional accountability involving figures such as economist Jean Dreze, political commentator Parakala Prabhakar, and actor Prakash Raj.
The CPI(M) leader confirmed that his party is aligning with the INDIA bloc and various civil society groups to challenge the current leadership of the Election Commission. Describing the campaign as a multi-dimensional struggle to preserve constitutional integrity, Baby called for the unification of disparate protest movements into a singular force. The coalition intends to maintain pressure on the government, focusing on accusations of electoral malpractice and the demand for the removal of the current poll chief.
