SFI and DYFI protest to reclaim Jantar Mantar as demonstration site

Marching from Firoz Shah Road to the historic Jantar Mantar site, the Students' Federation of India and the Democratic Youth Federation of India demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar while challenging the recent administrative decision to strip the location of its status as a designated protest venue.

The demonstration follows an October 12 notice de-notifying Jantar Mantar, a move prompted by a Ministry of Home Affairs committee tasked with identifying alternative gathering spaces. Delhi Police have since redirected protests to Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground in East Delhi. Police Commissioner Anurag Kumar confirmed that a revised Standard Operating Procedure for these new sites is currently in development.

Tensions escalated alongside broader agitation from the INDIA bloc, which held its own march from Connaught Place to protest alleged electoral manipulation. During the same period, authorities arrested three activists from the Cockroach Janta Party—Sourav Das, Ashutosh Ranka, and Ajinkya Shinde—following an October 13 incident where members entered the Jantar Mantar premises. While Das and Ranka were remanded to five days of judicial custody, the CJP maintains its defiance, asserting that the removal of a central protest venue will not deter their campaign for electoral accountability.
