In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump cited expert assessments claiming Greenland holds untapped oil reserves exceeding those found in most other regions globally. Beyond resource potential, he framed the island as a critical defensive bastion for the U.S. and Europe, describing it as an essential early-warning and interception point against future airborne threats, including drones and advanced missile systems.
This announcement follows a September agreement signed alongside Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. While Trump has characterized the arrangement as granting the U.S. permanent, "infinite" control over security matters and effectively barring foreign adversaries from establishing military bases or sensitive investments on the island, Danish officials have provided a more measured account. Copenhagen describes the pact as a framework for enhanced security cooperation that explicitly acknowledges Greenland’s continued sovereign position within the Kingdom of Denmark.
